Abstract/Description
Charlotte Tonna was a popular English writer that published a number of short stories and novels throughout the United Kingdom and the United States.Tonna often was credited for her work under the name "Charlotte Elizabeth."  First published in London in 1827, The System: A Tale of the West Indies is a fictional account of slavery in England's West Indian colonies. Prominent themes in the novel include Christianity, morals,  and conversion.  The novel notably features concerns about the inhumane treatment of enslaved people in the colonies.
