Abstract/Description
Marcella Wilkin's novel The Slave Son takes place in Trinidad during mass emancipation of the enslaved following the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. Part love story, part abolitionist critique, the novel tells the story of soon to be emancipated Belfond and Laurine as they fall in love during a historically chaotic period. Wilkin's originally began writing this in 1840 but abandoned the project without completing it. Then, after the positive reception of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, she was inspired to take up the project once again and finished the novel, publishing it in 1854.
