Abstract/Description
Born in England in 1768, Maria Edgeworth was an acclaimed Anglo-Irish writer, known for both her short stories and children's literature. Her work The Grateful Negro and The Manufacturers tells the story of two slave owners, Mr. Jeffries and Mr. Edwards, and the virtually opposite ways in which they treated their slaves. Mr. Edwards was far kinder and more compassionate towards his slaves, and acted as a shining example of a slave owner. This made the story quite popular among abolitionists and was widely circulated through multiple versions and editions across Europe, North America, and the West Indies. This particular version was published in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1865. It was often published together with The Grateful Negro and The Birthday Present, which is also available in our archive.
