Abstract/Description
Published in Jamaica in 1820, A Treatise on the Diseases of Negroes is English physician James Thomson's record of the medical issues common among mostly the enslaved people of the island of Jamaica. It contains his observations about the general health of the people, as well as, signs and symptoms of the diseases and the best methods for treating them. While most of the treatise focuses on medical issues, the treatise also describes the management of slaves. The introductory remarks and the concluding list of medicines suggest that the disease and treatments described by Thomson are not strictly limited to the Caribbean islands or the enslaved people. In fact, in his other medical texts, he observes that the largest differences between the illnesses of the 'skin' such as rashes, sun exposure, and the manifestation of symptoms of other illnesses.
