Abstract/Description
Born in 1812, Theodora Elizabeth Lynch was an English poet and novelist. In 1865 she published Years Ago: A Tale of West Indian Domestic Life of the Eighteenth Century, a coming of age novel written in the diary-epistolary form. Years Ago is said to be heavily influenced by Lynch's upbringing. Similar to the novel's narrator, Lynch was raised on a Jamaican sugarcane plantation and came from a wealthy family. Throughout the novel, the narrator describes daily life and details all of the domestic happenings on the plantation. This novel is notable for its depiction of enslaved women. They are portrayed with positivity, and as Northeastern University Professor Jessica Nelson has described, seen as "a figure actively engaged in recreating, modifying, and critiquing English domesticity." Prominent themes in the novel include domestic life, female relationships, and slave ownership.
