The Four Stages of the Sugar Cane

This image, The Sugar Cane, in its four different stages, also done by John Stedman himself, features the development of the sugar plant over time. In the 1796 version of Narrative of a five years expedition against the revolted Negroes of Surinam where this plate is located, following page 314, Stedman describes the process in which the plant grows, the conditions it grows in, and how it is eventually cultivated.
