Azure Blue Butterfly of South America

Title
Azure Blue Butterfly of South America
Abstract/Description
This image Azure blue Butterfly of South America was done based on sketches made by John Stedman himself during his stay in Guianas, and is a part of his workNarrative of a five years expedition against the revolted Negroes of Surinam. This engraving with colored ink, which can be found following page 278 in the 1796 version, features two forms of the same butterfly, both its large blue wings with the butterfly seemingly in flight, and it’s neutral-toned under wings while the butterfly is perched on a free-floating flower are highlighted in this image. Stedman’s work was said to have been influenced by Maria Sibylla Merian a botanist that studied on the island of Suriname during the early 1700s.
