Abstract/Description
Born in England in 1768, Maria Edgeworth was an acclaimed writer, known for both her short stories and children's literature. Her work The Grateful Negro and The Birthday Present is a didactic tale that tells the story of a young girl that learns the importance of generosity through her interactions with slaves. Edgeworth's stories were popular among abolitionists, who often reprinted her work and provided it to their children as behavioral and moral guides. This version of The Grateful Negro and The Birthday Present was printed in Edinburgh in 1874. It was often published together with The Grateful Negro and The Manufacturers, which is also available in our archive.
